Event Lighting Hire Gold Coast: Planner Guide

Krank'd stage lighting for Clancestry, a large concert event in Brisbane

You’ve secured the venue, locked in the date, and your event is taking shape. Now comes one of the most impactful decisions you’ll make: lighting.

As Gold Coast and Brisbane’s dedicated stage and event lighting hire company, we work with event planners, production coordinators, and venue managers every week. Here’s what we wish every client knew before their first call.

Start With the Venue, Not the Fixtures

The single biggest factor in choosing the right lighting package isn’t the event type — it’s the venue. An outdoor festival at Broadwater Parklands needs a completely different approach to a gala at HOTA or a corporate function at The Star.

Before contacting any lighting hire company, have these details ready:

  • Venue dimensions and ceiling height — this determines fixture throw distance and rigging options
  • Power availability — most venues have 15A or 32A circuits. Large rigs need 63A or generator power
  • Rigging points — can we fly truss, or does it need to be ground-supported?
  • Indoor/outdoor — outdoor events need IP-rated (weather-proof) fixtures. We carry a full range of IP65 and IP67 gear
  • Bump-in and bump-out times — a 2-hour bump-in means a very different rig to an 8-hour build day

The Difference Between Dry Hire and Supply & Operate

Dry hire means you collect the gear and run it yourself. Supply and operate means our crew designs, delivers, installs, programs, operates, and packs down the entire lighting rig. For anything beyond basic uplighting or festoon, we strongly recommend supply and operate — you’re paying for expertise, not just equipment.

Our operators have lit Queensland Theatre, QSO at QPAC, BLEACH* Festival, and hundreds of corporate and community events across South East Queensland. That experience shows in the result.

What Does Event Lighting Actually Cost?

This varies enormously based on the scale and complexity of your event. A simple festoon or uplighting package for a wedding or corporate dinner might start from a few hundred dollars. A full production rig for a festival stage with moving heads, LED fixtures, haze, and a lighting console is a different conversation entirely.

The best approach: tell us about your event, your venue, and your vision. We’ll put together an honest quote based on what will actually work — not upsell you on gear you don’t need.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

  1. Do you carry IP-rated fixtures? — Critical for any outdoor event on the Gold Coast. Rain happens.
  2. Who operates the lighting on the night? — Ask about their experience. Our operators program and run shows live, not just set-and-forget.
  3. What’s included in bump-in? — Delivery, setup, cabling, programming, pack-down, collection. Know exactly what you’re getting.
  4. Do you carry backup gear? — We always have redundancy built into our rigs. Ask your hire company if they do.
  5. Can I see examples of similar events? — Check our portfolio or videos page.
